Darning
Darning is a repair technique used to both mend holes and reinforce worn areas. It’s a skilled process that requires use of a specialized sewing machine.
Darning works by interweaving the garment’s fabric with new thread, weaving along the grain in rows and then filling in that area in the other direction, effectively creating a patch merely from needle and thread. Darning can be done by hand, but we prefer machine darning for the added strength.
Because darning doesn’t require a seam, it’s often more comfortable than patches in certain areas of the garment, and it has the benefit of flexibility given the nature of the technique. A heritage mending technique, we often choose to darn with tonal thread to match the original garment, preserving the integrity of the look without calling too much attention to the repairs.
Patching
Patching involves applying a piece of fabric over or under a damaged area to reinforce or replace worn areas. Patches placed over a hole or threadbare section are zig-zag stitched to prevent fraying, creating a durable repair without adding the bulk of seams.
Patching is utilized instead of darning in situations where larger holes are present. Because it is often easier for beginner or at-home sewers, some of the garments we source have been lovingly patched by their previous owners, and we prefer to leave those historic repairs intact. Like darning, our philosophy is to select tonal materials and thread that complement the original garment, balancing structural integrity with visual cohesion.
Hem Reconstruction
A combination of darning with the introduction of new material, hem repair restores frayed or worn hems (often seen at the back of the pant hem, nicknamed ‘heel bite’). By reconstructing the garment edge, our approach maintains original proportions while ensuring clean, durable finishing
Hardware Replacement
This process replaces missing or damaged buttons, zippers, rivets, or hardware with functional equivalents. We prioritize using Carhartt and/or period-correct hardware to maintain authenticity.
